Obituary for Joanne Kearney (Duffy)

Joanne Kearney, 79, a 50-year resident of Carlstadt, died peacefully with her family beside her on February 13, 2022. Joanne was born in Jersey City to Helen and Joseph Duffy and was predeceased by her husband John Kearney. She is survived by her devoted children Laura Kearney of Carlstadt and Thomas (Christy) Kearney of Ridgewood, and her grandchildren, Kathryn, John, Clare, and Daniel, who adored her. She is also survived by her sister Betty (Joe) Bretting of California and predeceased by sisters Geraldine Duffy (Carlstadt) and Noel Hanley (Bayonne).

After graduating from St. Michael’s High School in Union City, Joanne attended secretarial school and began her career as an administrative assistant for JPMorgan on Wall Street. She later worked as a secretary at Washington School in Carlstadt before returning to JPMorgan Chase. She retired to play an integral part in raising her 4 beloved grandchildren.

Joanne valued education and provided her children and grandchildren with cultural and educational opportunities. She was an ever-present fan at their theater and athletic events--and regularly stole the show in family videos. She was a life-long learner who loved to read, travel, and attend adult education classes at Bergen Community College. Her 2013 cancer diagnosis did not curtail her sense of adventure and she kept enjoying trips throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Joanne believed in giving back and volunteered for community organizations including: Junior Wildcat Booster Club (president), Carlstadt Public Library Board (vice-president), Carlstadt Senior Housing Committee, and Carlstadt Senior Friendship Club (corresponding secretary). She helped initiate the Seniors’ attendance in Arts Access at BergenPAC, served as a 9/11 Museum volunteer, and was a parishioner at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church.

She was a woman of many passions, including: Block Island, Ireland tours led by Hank, reality TV, van Gogh, Stanley Tucci, “The Lost Kitchen,” matching accessories to her outfits, and calls and dinners with friends.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in East Rutherford. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
